Maxeme Tuchman, the former CEO and co-founder of the acclaimed edtech company Caribu, is stepping into the political arena as a candidate for the Miami-Dade Public Schools Board. Her campaign is driven by a commitment to depoliticize the education system and enhance the quality of public schooling.
With endorsements from local leaders and educators, Tuchman plans to leverage her extensive background in technology and education to introduce innovative solutions aimed at boosting literacy and family involvement in schools. Her track record as a woman entrepreneur exemplifies strong leadership, problem-solving capabilities, effective communication, and financial acumen.
Rooted in a Rich Legacy of Education and Survival
Tuchman’s passion for education is deeply personal, inspired by her family’s history of overcoming adversity. As descendants of Jewish refugees, her ancestors fled persecution—from the Bolsheviks in Ukraine to the Holocaust in Poland—and later sought refuge in Cuba before finally settling in Miami. Their journey underscored the vital role of education and resilience in securing a better future.
A product of Miami Dade County Public Schools, Tuchman continued her education at New College of Florida, amidst its current controversies over political agendas and academic freedom. She excelled despite the challenges of navigating the educational system as an English second language speaker without full awareness of available resources. This experience shaped her senior thesis on education as a tool for social justice, advocating for high standards that prepare all students for future success.
From Classroom to Tech Entrepreneurship
Tuchman’s career began in the classrooms of Miami as part of Teach For America, followed by a transformative stint in the Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs in New York City. Her role in the Bloomberg administration and subsequent achievements—including earning dual degrees from Harvard and her work as a White House fellow—reflect her multifaceted approach to leadership and governance.
In 2016, Tuchman and co-founder Alvaro Sabido launched Caribu to address educational disparities through technology. The platform, which enhances children’s literacy and language skills, was recognized globally, earning accolades from Apple and Time Magazine among others. After raising nearly $6 million in venture capital and making strategic decisions to support diversity in investment, Tuchman successfully sold Caribu to Mattel in 2022.
A Vision for Miami-Dade Schools
As a school board candidate, Tuchman is focused on three primary objectives: expanding early childhood education, enhancing student safety both physically and online, and preparing students for future job markets. Her comprehensive experience in education, government, and technology equips her to bring substantial improvements to the educational landscape of Miami-Dade.
Her candidacy is seen as a crucial step toward revitalizing public education in Florida, with local educators like Crystal Etienne praising her as a refreshing and inspiring figure necessary for the survival of public education in the state.
Maxeme Tuchman’s blend of entrepreneurial spirit, educational insight, and commitment to community engagement positions her as a formidable candidate for the Miami-Dade Public Schools Board.
